Back in 2000, Ellipsis Arts released OHM: The Early Gurus of Electronic Music, a amazing and considerable three CD location tracing the evolution of “electronica” from Messiaen, Cage, and Xenakis to Schulze, Eno, and Hassell. This position was recently reissued (as OHM+) along with a bonus DVD (which is thankfully now available separately for those of us who already have the CDs.) You can read plenty of satisfactory reviews of the fresh 3CD region on Amazon (and elsewhere), so I’m going to focus on the original DVD in this review.

The OHM+ DVD is jam-packed with over two hours of archival and more unique footage that runs the gamut from tantalizing to mildly enchanting to unwatchably insensible.

If seemingly endless “talking head” interviews with Milton Babbitt and Bebe Barron are your plan of video entertainment, you’ve reach to the factual space. An interview with John Cage digitally altered beyond all recognition? Check. Swirling psychadelic colored dyes factual out of a Saucerful of Secrets-era Pink Floyd concert? No dilemma.

There are some tastier goodies to be found on this DVD, however…

The segments with Clara Rockmore and Leon Theremin have an appealingly amateurish home movie quality to them. It’s also a true treat to study the 1978 footage of underappreciated minimalist guru David Borden and Mother Mallard’s Portable Masterpiece Company “on the road” hauling around their truckload of gargantuan primitive analog synthesizer equipment. Laurie Spiegel is fun to gaze as she tinkers with a mountainous grey metal box called a “Concerto Generator” with an extremely serious expression on her face. And Alvin Lucier’s “Music for Solo Performer,” where he hooks up wires to his head and produces sounds using his brainwaves and two tympani, simply must be seen to be believed.

The Pixar-ish computer animation accompanying Paul Lansky’s “The Dust Bunny” is sort of cute, but it goes on for about 10 minutes too long. Surely most of the OHM target audience already has the DVD of Steve Reich’s Three Tales, but it’s nice that they included the best share – the ominous yet goofy “Dolly” segment. Many have also probably seen Hans Fjellestad’s documentary Moog before, but the six shrimp excerpt provided here is really about all you need.

It’s too abominable there isn’t a more attractive John Cage segment, and regrettable that there aren’t any Stockhausen videos (those would certainly be a riot!)

Overall, though, while the OHM+ DVD is not as consistently titillating as the CD spot of the same name, it is a profitable companion to it. And if you don’t have either of them yet, the complete OHM+ 3-CD & DVD “special edition” box dwelling is a no-brainer.

“Hollywood Hotel” was maybe the last of the great budget musicals from Warner Brothers in the thirties. The cycle was running out of steam, particularly when the Hays Code censorship removed the sting in the screenplays and finally when Dick Powell, fed up with playing singing ninnies, left the studio. This one is based on a radio point to of the same name, hosted by Hearst gossip columnist, Louella Parsons. The film is a spoof of stardom with Lola Lane playing a glum star and Powell trying to bag a shatter. As farce, the film is quite laughable, the highlight being the hilarious performance by Alan Mowbray as a ham leading man. He steals the film.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hollywood Hotel! Click Here

Here are some points to note:

- Rosemary Lane plays the ingenue opposite Powell. Lane has charm to spare and a attractive presence but her trained soprano does not lend itself to the pop tunes. Her singing vow grates.

- the songs from Johnny Mercer are not memorable with 2 exceptions. Both “Hooray for Hollywood” and “Let that be a Lesson for you” have bouncy arrangements and dynamic visuals with Busby Berkeley flying around on his mutter. The lyrics are tossed around too and this really makes them energetic and moving.

Buy,Download, Or Stream Hollywood Hotel! Click Here

- Benny Goodman’s band appears and Harry James solos some choruses.

- Louella Parsons grins her role, certain positive to convince us she is a nice person, which she was decidely not.

- Ronald Reagan and Carole Landis are clearly visible in bit parts, the old as a radio announcer and the latter as a hat check girl.

The print is in broad condition and there are quite a few extras. The short film with ventriloquist Edgar Bergin and puppet Charlie McCarthy is typical dated fare and the technicolour short on Scottish poet Robbie Burns is unsuitable although the colour is preserved well. It is hilarious to look the arid California country doubling for rugged Scotland. The cartoon is qualified fun with Porky Pig in an imaginative fantasy which manages to tie into the film and its songs cleverly. The current trailer is of current interest too because it contains a chorus of Frances Langford which does not appear in the film (you can seek where it has been crop when you understanding the film) and an alternative rob of the finale.

The DVD is best value if purchased as portion of the second situation of the films of Busby Berkeley.

It may be that Hollywood has made a musical with a more energetic, dynamic opening than Hollywood Hotel, but I haven’t approach across it. Just off the bat there’s Benny Goodman and his orchestra, all dressed in white suits, each standing in a convertible, all being driven down a highway led by motorcycle cops to the St. Louis airport, and all playing loud and hastily one of Richard Whiting’s and Johnny Mercer’s greatest songs. They’re sending off to Hollywood the orchestra’s saxophonist, Ronnie Bowers (Dick Powell), who has impartial won a ten-week contract in Tinsel Town. Without skipping a beat, Johnnie Davis, a mug-faced trumpet player, starts singing the lyrics, then Frances Langford picks up a chorus or two.

Hooray for Hollywood!

That screwy, ballyhooey Hollywood!

Where any office boy or young mechanic

Can be a alarm with objective a good-looking pan!

And any barmaid can be a star maid

If she dances with or without a fan!

Hooray for Hollywood!

Where you’re terrific if you’re even superior!

Where anyone at all from Shirley Temple

To Aimee Semple is equally understood!

Come on and try your luck, you could be Donald Duck!

Hooray for Hollywood!

It would be hard to top this, and Hollywood Hotel doesn’t arrive conclude. The quandary is the set — it’s too complicated and goes on too long — and, surprisingly, since Whiting and Mercer wrote the songs — the songs they wrote. With the exception of Hooray for Hollywood, their songs in my plan are honorable but not especially memorable. “Let That Be a Lesson to You” has a clever Mercer lyric but is staged with mountainous corn by director Busby Berkeley. It’s no accident, I believe, that Hooray for Hollywood not only became a crash but Tinsel Town’s de facto anthem. It’s that helpful.

Hollywood Hotel is stuffed with mix-ups, misunderstandings and erroneous identities, but none of them are worth remembering. The site has to do with the naive and involved Ronnie and his adventures thinking he’ll be a star. There’s the snooty leading lady (Lola Lane) who takes a plug, the waitress substitute who looks like her and fools Ronnie (Rosemary Lane, doing a nice job imitating an uber-gracious leading lady), the dense and egotistical leading man (Alan Mowbray) and on and on. Ronnie loses his grand smash, winds up selling hamburgers and malts, but then he comes assist large. Mowbray is impartial elegant, especially when he’s miming “I’ve Hitched My Wagon to a Star” with Powell’s explain. Dr. Benny Goodman and his orchestra provide a number of musical injections, including “Screech, Mumble, Bid.” Several of his key players such as Lionel Hampton, Gene Krupa, and Teddy Wilson are featured. There are the uncredited-and-very-young-future-stars to region, such as Susan Hayward, Ronald Reagan and Carole Landis. On the other hand, there’s Hugh Herbert to endure (he’s even in a dark face bit), Mabel Todd (a kind of bargain basement Cass Dailey) and Luella Parsons playing herself. Parsons is particularly abominable.

And there’s Dick Powell, who manages to give the movie some energy as the likable, singing Ronnie Bowers. Powell seemed always to play cocky, confident guys. Here’s he’s an innocent in Hollywood, but honest as energetic and confident. By now, 1937, he could sight the writing on the wall…namely, the destroy of his career if he couldn’t collect out of playing light romantic singing leads in brainless musicals. He finally managed with Cancel My Sweet in 1944 when he was 40, but it took him seven years. During that time he was placed in silliness with titles like The Cowboy from Brooklyn, Hard to Score, Going Places, Impish But Nice and I Want a Divorce. He might have been a bit lucky with Kill My Sweet, but he also was persistent, ambitious and lustrous about what he needed. One of these days I hope we’ll explore DVD versions of two movies of his I like a lot. One is The Mammoth Target (1951) . Powell is a detective out to foil a conspiracy to slay Lincoln as the President-elect travels to Washington for his first inaugural. It’s a well-made, taut period mystery. Then there’s You Never Can Deliver (1951), a wry comedy about a German Shepherd who inherits millions and is promptly poisoned. He comes help to earth for a few days as a human to obtain who killed him and to protect the young woman who’d cared for him. Powell plays the temporary human, named Rex of course.

Renting Hollywood Hotel may be the only chance you’ll have to hear all the choruses to Hooray for Hollywood. It’s one of Mercer’s best sets of comedy lyrics.

With Fox getting ready to release a new-live action adaptation of Dragonball, I decided to go out and buy the first live-action Dragonball film, which was made in China (without the consent of Akira Toriyama) and released advance the slay of the 1980s.

I wasn’t surprised to salvage that this film is abominable. Really awful.

Well, okay, I will admit that it’s one of those films thats so poor it’s excellent, but it absolutely butchers the novel plan damn arrive beyond recognition. The Dragon Balls are called Dragon Pearls, Goku and his friends face off against a Power Rangers reject and foot soldiers with unpleasant 80s hair, and none of the characters are named correctly (and in most cases are only vague shadows of their source material counterparts) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream DragonBall: Ultimate Edition! Click Here

The film is so vulgar budget that it steals its musical earn directly from other things (the music mature when Goku rides the flying nimbus for the first time is lifted wholesale from the inspiring series Ranma 1/2) .

This is the kind of film that fully deserved to appear on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Even sans a riff track, the film is intensely (and most probably unintentionally) comical.

If you’re the sort of person who likes terrible films that are unintentionally laughable, you’ll laugh until you sob whilst watching this (my best friend actually got a nosebleed because he was laughing so hard) .

I (being a DB/DBZ/DBGT fan in any language or format) tried to collect a copy of this “movie” for years, and, when I finally found it on Amazon, I rejoiced…until I watched it.

This movie is Terrible. The Dragon Ball Evolution movie is a million times better than this “movie”, and I opinion ‘Evolution’ was awful.

I will list the negative aspects of this “film”. I would list the obvious, but I can’t near up with any.

1) BULMA IS ONLY MODERATELY GOOD-LOOKING

Bulma should ALWAYS be the most delicate woman in existence.

2) GOKU

A) IS PLAYED BY A WOMAN

Now, I know that the person who does Goku’s issue in the new Japanese version of the anime note is a woman. That doesn’t bother me at all. In fact, I occupy her voice-acting to that of S.S. in the American voice-overs, BUT this is live-action. Goku should observe tough, not like a sixteen year outmoded girl.

B) CAN Flee WITH Nyoibô?

I mean, I know it can extend over two-hundred and fify-thousand miles, but a jet-pack it is not.

C) HAS THE SAME POWER-LEVEL AS YAMCHA?

This is shown to us in a really terrible computer-animated sequence.

3) KRILLIN (KULILIN) IS NOT IN THE FILM

I’ve heard people complain about the lack of Vegeta, but he’s

not even in the recent DB series. Krillin is! Where’s Krillin?!?!?!

4) YAMCHA

Actually, the actor portraying Yamcha does the best job in

the “film” in my belief. (Wow! One clear stutter!)

5) OVERALL PRODUCTION VALUE IS WORSE THAN POWER RANGERS

In fact, I have the feeling that people who didn’t compose the sever

to be on the crew for POWER RANGERS moved to China and made

this “movie”.

6) BREATHTAKINGLY Awful CHINESE CINEMA

I be pleased superb Chinese cinema, as well as some that’s abominable, but

this makes the Shaw Bros.’ flick Shadowy MAGIC look

like a masterpiece.

7) KIDS WON’T EVEN Examine IT

I did everything but strap six different kids (extinct 8 – 13) down

and made them peer, but only two made it all the method through.

Those two kids are unexcited angry at me.

This “film” is an abomination.

I can’t fraction any more of my thoughts without using profanity.

P.S. If you want a proper live-action movie about Goku, stare THE FORBIDDEN KINGDOM. Goku is loosely based on the monkey king (who is a major character in that movie) anyway. I mediate Jet Li as the character whom Goku is based on is as favorable as we’ll ever find in a live-action film that has any resemblance to Dragon Ball.

I’m going to be perfectly unprejudiced, I’ve watched so many “Spider-Man” animations throughout my lifetime and the only attractive series that I have enjoyed so far is the 1980’s series “Spider-Man and his Incredible Friends”.

But that was around 25-years-ago and there have been quite a number of Spider-Man interesting series that have been featured solid stories and I content for each series, they really have fit the generation for the audience its targeting.

So, here we are with “The Spectacular Spider-Man” which is the rage among young viewers like my 6-year-old son and his friends and cousins who absolutely worship the series (and the unique McDonald’s Gay Meal toys of the series) .

Buy,Download, Or Stream The Spectacular Spider-Man, Vol. 2! Click Here

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series for the next generation. Peter Parker is no longer the bookworm that is an outcast in the whole school. No glasses, no abominable clothing and no self-esteem issues like the fresh teenager of the funny book series. In fact, the spider he has been bit by is not radioactive but genetically altered.

This Peter Parker is cooler and even sports a man bag (or school bag) and has a birthmark.

In volume 2, Peter Parker has recently been hired by the Daily Bugle due to his photographs of Spider-Man and in this series, his best friend is Harry Osborne and Gwen Stacey.

Meanwhile, a criminal known as “The Great Man” has his henchman Hammerhead collaborating with Norman Osborn and Dr. Otto Octavius in creating super-villains.

The episodes in volume two are as follows:

Episode 4 – Market Forces – The next criminal given abilities is the Sizable Man’s enforcer, Montana, who has been given an outfit and a pair of gauntlets that can shoot electric volts (as with his whole costume) which can be ancient to close Spider-Man. Being traditional as bait to attract Spider-Man are bumbling thieves Flint Marko and Aleksei Sytsevich that Spider-Man seems to have caught many times. Meanwhile, Peter Parker gets a job at the Daily Bugle as an odd photographer for J. Jonah Jameson.

But things are not all peachy-keen for Peter Parker because of his duties as Spider-Man and working at the Bugle (to succor pay his and Aunt May’s bills), his friendship with not being there for Gwen and Harry is starting to suffer. Meanwhile, Aunt May wants Peter to grasp her friend’s niece to the formal which Peter is not to thrilled about.

Episode 5 – Competition – Dr. Otto Octavius has a original test to accomplish a dapper criminal and the test patient is thief, Flint Marko who is turned to “Sandman”. Meanwhile, Harry is having problems at home (his relationship with his father Norman is not that ample) and thus decides to join the football team to hopefully come by some acceptance from his father and also become common and hopes Peter can succor him up on the team. Meanwhile, Flash and his jock friends will do what they can to prevent the two from joining the football team.

Episode 6 – The Invisible Hand – Dr. Octavius has a unusual test for the thief Aleksei. By fusing a obvious costume to his skin to beget him the powerhouse villain known as Rhino. Rhino is ticked that Peter Parker showcases Spider-Man and now wants Peter Parker to feature him on the newspaper. Meanwhile, Peter Parker is serene looking for a date to the formal and asks J. Jonah Jameson’s secretary Betty Brandt to go with him (despite her being several years older) .

As mentioned, “THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” is definitely a series that has caught a lot of attention and even IGN has voted it as #30 in their “TOP 100 BEST Exciting TV SHOWS” poll. Unlike other Spider-Man enchanting series, Spider-Man’s physique matches a young teenager (as it should) .

The series manages to grasp Peter Parker’s humor and the series is definitely new that the characters and the high school students feature multi-ethnic characters. May it be the students at the high school or employees at the Bugle, it was ravishing helpful to peruse that.

And for us older folks archaic to the classic provocative series or older silly books and have young children, there is always something lively with Spider-Man throughout the years, no matter how great it differs from what we grew up with, the soul of Spider-Man and the characters are faithful but adjusted for current times.

And it’s definitely a series that we can gape and be pleased with our children. Another fun and spicy volume of “The Spectacular Spider-Man”.

VIDEO & AUDIO:

Video is presented in 1:78:1 anamorphic widescreen. Animation is nice and vibrant. Lines are natty, characters and objects are simple with shadows and not as mighty detail when it comes to the backgrounds. But the choice to do this was to replicate fluidity of Spider-Man in the films. But overall, the animation is splendid and elegant.

Audio is presented in English 5.1 (Dolby Digital) and French (Dolby Surround) .

SPECIAL FEATURES:

There are no special features but trailers/previews.

JUDGMENT CALL:

“THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN” has been a resplendent solid series thus far. Again, it’s not the Spider-Man I grew up with but for a recent generation watching this, it’s adapted for a new setting, its inspiring noteworthy differently than any Spider-Man animations in the past but everything works.

Watching it with my son, I assume it was enormous to win a series that would be inspiring to the young children, teenagers and the adults.

I’ve read several interviews with series developers Victor Cook and Greig Weisman and both are Spider-Man fans but also fans of other genres such as Hong Kong films and also grabbing ideas from different eras, may it be from “Ultimate Spider-Man”, the films and thus distinct purists may have a hard time with it but again, as a fan of the laughable books and the many incarnations of Spider-Man arresting series, whats considerable is that this series remains faithful to the characters. Determined, they may have different storylines of how the villains became to be what they are but mild, the essence of who Peter Parker is and having to be this hero but yet gleaming that it will affect his personal relationships with those conclude to him is smooth intact.

Episodes 4-6 was delicious and big to peer villains such as the Shocker, Sandman and Rhino. So, any Spider-Man fan will know how frigid that is to stare him facing off with these villains.

I especially liked the Peter Parker scenes, whereas in the past, I would be into the Spider-Man battles and couldn’t wait for Peter Parker change to Spidey, for “THE SPECTACULAR SPIDER-MAN”, I like the dramatic storyline with his friendship to Harry Osborn and Gwen Stacey to the high school situations he takes fragment in, such as he and Harry trying to invent the football team and finding dates to the Winter Formal. Overall, I like the direction the writers have going for Peter Parker. And it’s substantial to watch Peter Parker not bullied so extremely like he was in the classic silly book series.

Overall, a fun and really delightful series. Budget conscious parents may want to wait for a burly season box state release. I wished there was some sort of special feature included on the DVD but overall, an spirited series that both young and archaic can relish. Check it out!

Great product and appropiate for my 5 year stale who is a giant fan of spiderman.

While people often gush — and rightly so — about the Charlie Brown Christmas and Halloween cartoons, I often feel like this is the “lost” Peanuts holiday special that doesn’t quite obtain the attention of its more current siblings.

Charlie Brown, through no fault of his have, gets roped into preparing a Thanksgiving dinner for Peppermint Patty and all his friends. And this from a boy who can barely build frigid cereal and toast. Snoopy and Woodstock lend a hand in the kitchen with predictably humorous results.

While it’s not as iconic as some of the other Peanuts specials, it’s a righteous memoir that really grasps the characters very well. This DVD also features “The Mayflower Voyages,” one of several specials that cast the Peanuts characters as participants in American history. It’s a valid educational tool for the kids, mixing in some of the harsher facts of life at Plymouth Rock with the softer, happier mood of the Peanuts gang. Together, these two cartoons are well worth the DVD.

This video takes me abet to being a kid and being able to discontinue up and eye the specials that came on TV for the holidays. This is objective a grand simple cartoon for kids and parents alike. You will never be disapointed with any Charlie Brown cartoon. From Lucy’s contant quest to never let Charlie Brown never kick the football,to Charlie Browns deep thoughts on life. You will always worship this one.

Quite simply, this is reality television or what reality television should have been before it got commandeered by posers in constructed atmospheres. Have you ever understanding about why it’s called “Reality TV” when there isn’t anything dependable about it? A bunch of people who would never meet up in steady life are thrown together in a completely artificial situation-a house, an island-to compete for something equally artificial-a modeling contract, a million dollars. That’s not staunch. This American Life is a hundred percent human, loyal, and down to earth all the time. The stories are forthright, touching, wonderful.

It’s a testament to Ira’s skill as an interviewer that he somehow manages to earn people and drawl their stories without artifice-there isn’t an ounce of cheese or a single turn of hasten in any one of these stories. You don’t hear Ira or his staff ask a lot of questions on camera, but he must be astonishing at his job because he brings out the best in people. Also the camera shots in this series are outstanding. In one interview a 13 year venerable boy rallies against admire while his red headed classmate floats dreamily though a field of grass. In another interview the viewers win to survey Chance the Bull through the kitchen window of it’s owner. It’s magnificent. All of it. It’s simply astounding. My husband and I were both teary eyed after several of these stories.

Besides meeting a 13 year passe boy who has sworn off appreciate, you’ll visit a Chicago hot dog stand where customers and staff divulge at each other in a free for all that brings out the worst in human nature, sit with a man who watches TV in his wife’s mausoleum every other day, breeze the ranch of a kind hearted Texas man who had his beloved bull cloned and you’ll probably give up meat after “smelling” an Iowa pig farm. And after every single episode you’ll feel like the human speed isn’t headed for a expansive dark hole in residence after all. You’ll feel like we’re valid, like there’s hope for us because it can’t be that bleak if this is what people are really like-vulnerable, kind, exciting, friendly hearted.

If you’re looking for more culture like this-I’d recommend The Unusual Kings of Non-Fiction edited by Ira Glass and Best American Essays 2007 edited by David Foster Wallace. And for a movie that’s down to earth (if a exiguous quirky) Eagle v. Shark.

Ira Glass and company have been producing the lovable radio point to “This American Life” for years now. Fans of the radio exhibit will undoubtedly be involved in the television point to.

The note is masterfully photographed, and very well produced. I notion at first that if the television note was to be as effective as the radio explain, it would be nearly impossible to develop, but apparently not so! Content-wise, it’s very similar to the radio present. Every narrative follows a favorite tale arc, but each chronicle also features the modern setting that the radio indicate is known for. There’s really exiguous more to be said, especially if you are already a fan of the radio exhibit. This is precise American journalism focused on unfamiliar people who every day pass for celebrated. Ira Glass and his demonstrate bring us these people’s stories and do so with colossal artistry.

Often comical, sometimes shadowy, but always fascinating, “This American Life” is groundbreaking television!

I have to be objective when I first heard of this movie. My first belief was another dreadful movie like the Cookout. To my righteous surprise It was really expedient. It has a distinct message which will appeal to anyone. Monique plays a salesperson trying design a clothing line for plus-size women while battling the prejudice that she meets from others as well as accepting who she is. A movie about self-esteem,self-improvement, self-awareness. I would recommended this to anyone.

It was nice to look a film with actresses who are not anorexic and who are self-confidant regardless of their looks. Too often a woman is valued only for her physical appearance. Ms O’Day preferred the title “stylist” as opposed to “singer” which I accept an bright distinction. I rep she made the distinction in acknowledgement that she had runt vocal range, an ordinary tone, and a unfamiliar timbre.

My first primary encounter with her music was post Gene Krupa with the release in 1956 of ANITA by Norman Granz and the best version of HONEYSUCKLE ROSE with its solo bass opening and quartet of trombones closing the final chorus. The whole album though, was and remains, one of her best, and one of the best of any JAZZ singer. And that’s where her reputation so superbly lies – as one of the very best JAZZ vocalists ever, and an individual woman who was a sizable survivor in a very difficult business – that she was embraced by the jazz community including afro american musicians, she got through the heroin slouch, she overcame the “canary” prejudice of “girl” singer by her musical brilliance in being celebrated rather as another musical INSTRUMENT instead of the “front” for a band.

This documentary – one of the best (musical ones) I’ve seen which was featured in the 2008 Sydney Film Festival – also reveals her character. Proper strength, modesty, honesty, notion and self awareness and I guess, joy of music, of living, are her distinguishing characteristics.

PLenty of top-notch music in the film as well!!

For a film documentary profile, there’s no substitute for stout footage of the subject him/herself providing their have reflections on his/her life and career. It’s broad that this documentary captures so remarkable of Anita’s maintain charmingly candid recollections of the ups and downs in her under-appreciated career. An captivating perceive of the life of a broad, vast jazz singer.

The Film: [Rating: 84%] Dreamworks challenger to the Disney ant favourite A Bug’s Life arrives on a feature packed DVD complete with a truly sumptuous transfer. Ok, so it’s a cartoon – but don’t be set off since this one is loaded with far more wit and style than your average kiddie flick (isn’t he in a A Bug’s Life? ) and features the vocal talents of Woody Allen, Sharon Stone, Dan Aykroyd, Gene Hackman, Danny Glover, Jennifer Lopez, Sylvester Stallone, Christopher Walken, Anne Bancroft and a shed load more glowing actors. Imagine this many actors in a live-action film, the fees, the makeup, the trailer size contests – I guess doing animation must be a welcome bit of fun, allowing dress-down days too!

The tale follows loner ant Z (pronounced zee, not zed!) who feels there should be more to life than his lot as a worker ant. Allen plays the lead, supported well be his best friend and soldier ant Weaver (Stallone) . Z’s path crosses that of the bored Princess Bala (Stone) whom he desperately wants to gape again. Following a microscopic persuasion, Z manages to trade places with Weaver for a area in the soldier’s parade – held in front of the royalty! I don’t want to give too great of the residence away since you’re better off watching but Z’s adventures to get the heart of the Princess, battle fierce termites Starship Troopers style, and his all round save-the-day antics are a treat for young and ancient alike. Kids will care for this gigantic cartoon but only adults will earn all of the humour and like the truly shapely computer animation.

It’s a pity this was released only one month before Disney’s ant based film and the subsequent press scrutiny they both received in the ‘Ant Wars’. They are very different films, unprejudiced both captivating and about ants. Personally I rate Antz slightly higher but I also deem that from a kid’s point of plan the adult nature of powerful of it’s humour may assign A Bug’s Life out in front as a point decision winner. Occupy the easy route and give both pride of region in your DVD collection!

The Picture: [Rating: 93%] Gob smacking! Awesome! Breath-taking! What more can be said about this 1.85:1 recent aspect ratio transfer from an all digital source. Colours are to die for – notice the Trash-topia sequence to spy what I mean, gloomy levels are location on, detail is truly astonishing, and there’s not a single imperfection noticeable anywhere. There was some reported moans that the film was based underground too distinguished, resulting in a too murky, earthy recognize – maybe an order with a VHS copy but not here. This is what DVD and widescreen were made for!

The Sound: [Rating: 82%] Again, absolutely awesome (do I have to add the word DUDE to truly convince? ) . Some have mentioned the drowning out of vocals during some of the terrifically loud action sequences but this didn’t affect me, even on (or maybe because of) my ‘pantz’ audio situation up.

The Extras: [Rating: 70%] Directors Tim Johnson and Eric Darnel feature on an informative full-length audio commentary. There’s a production featurette running under 5 minutes that is more interview soundbites than anything else. Powerful more revealing is the 11 minutes on The Basics of Computer Animation – focusing on the dance sequence and the water droplet, showing earn up from storyboards to the finished, lighted & unlit animation. Brief but nice is the one microscopic on the Antz Facial System. Last of the documentaries is 10 minutes 26 seconds worth of unbelievable hand-drawn art work showing the development of the Antz Character Manufacture. There are four TV spots, along with the theatrical trailer, but the usual filmo’s are blown away by a simple cast list. Finally there’s also eight pages worth of production notes. Packaging the whole thing together is a incredible menu system, fully though-provoking with ample transitions from one selection to another and all fully scored. Selecting the scene index from the front page (by spellbinding the giant magnifying class!) will tumble the ‘camera’ through the earth, taking you down to the Antz homeworld before displaying the four individually though-provoking clips that characterize four of the twenty six scenes available – top stuff!

And Finally… [Overall Rating: 86%] Well-behaved presentation – more meat on the extras would have been nice, but this is nit-picking since everything here is gold-plated!

I’m a college student who happened to spy this movie at a friends a few days before classes started, and I was quite surprised with the movie. The myth isn’t exceptoionally ingenious, but I laughed out-loud a few times. Some of the complaints about this movie would be expected: the language, the violence, and even a few sexual refrences. Like I said before, this is not a kid’s movie. Also, the complaint about all the brown tones is annoying, the brown is ment to be drab because it is only seen in the scenes with the worker ants. It’s symbolic, but anyone who understanding a movie with Woody Allen would be a kid’s movie wouldn’t understand that either.
